Embracing the Whole Child: Extending the Welcome Mat

Using the ASCD Whole Child Framework as a guide, presenters will share 10 strategies for extending the welcome mat by providing specific scenarios and strategies as examples of their experiences promoting equity and inclusion. With these tools, classroom teacher leaders can act immediately to serve students' needs within their classroom.

Outcomes:

After this session, participants will be able to: 1) Reflect on which of the 10 strategies they have already mastered. 2) Determine which strategies they have attempted and which they will begin exploring. 2) Refer to the shared slides and one-pager when sharing the information with their teams.

Donna Neary is a Class of ‘22 Emerging Leader and ‘23 grant recipient. She leads from the classroom in Chattanooga, TN, teaching English Language Development in middle school. Donna and fellow educators innovated the Accelerate to Graduate pilot in Louisville, KY increasing graduation rates for Multilingual learners. She was named Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of Kentucky based on that work. She is a National Geographic Society Covid-19 Remote Learning Emergency Fund for Educators Grant recipient. She is a Re-imagining Migration Ambassador and former Fellow, contributing articles and partnering on a curriculum. She contributes articles to Edsurge.com.
