Session Outline: Step Up to the Mic: Podcasting for Every Learner, Every Voice
Total Time: 60 minutes
1. Welcome & Framing the Session (5 minutes)
• Content: Introduce the purpose of the session, highlight ISTE Standards (Empowered Learner 1d, Creative Communicator 6b & 6d), and connect to Transformational Learning principles (cultivating belonging, prioritizing authentic experiences).
• Engagement: Quick audience poll using Padlet (“What role could podcasting play in your classroom?”).
2. Why Podcasting? Amplifying Student Voices (10 minutes)
• Content: Overview of podcasting as a tool for student agency, communication, and creativity. Share short examples of student podcasts across grade levels and subject areas.
• Engagement: Think-Pair-Share — participants reflect on classroom challenges podcasting could address and share ideas with a partner.
3. Podcasting in Action: Process & Tools (15 minutes)
• Content: Step-by-step breakdown of student podcast creation (planning, scripting, recording, editing, publishing). Showcase accessible, FREE tools for each stage.
• Engagement: Device-based mini activity — participants experiment with one tool (e.g., record a 30-second audio clip, brainstorm a podcast idea in small groups).
4. Designing for Every Learner (10 minutes)
• Content: Strategies for engaging diverse learners—choice in topics and formats, scaffolding technical skills, and providing flexible ways to publish/share. Connect to principles of belonging and authentic experiences.
• Engagement: Peer-to-peer exchange — groups brainstorm adaptations for different grade levels or subject areas and share back key takeaways.
5. Bringing It Back to Your Classroom (15 minutes)
• Content: Frameworks for planning ISTE-aligned podcasting projects. Share ready-to-use lesson templates and assessment ideas.
• Engagement: Small-group “design sprint” — participants outline a simple podcasting activity for their context, then post ideas to a collaborative Padlet/whiteboard wall.
6. Wrap-Up & Reflection (5 minutes)
• Content: Recap key takeaways, revisit ISTE Standards, highlight how podcasting cultivates belonging and authenticity.
• Engagement: Exit ticket — participants share one way they’ll “step up to the mic” with students (Padlet post).
After this session, participants will be able to design inclusive podcasting experiences that amplify student voice, foster creativity, and align with ISTE Standards. They will explore multimodal strategies and universal design principles to support all learners in selecting technologies, crafting original audio content, and customizing messages for authentic audiences. Attendees will leave with ready-to-use lesson ideas, free tools, and adaptable frameworks to help students become empowered learners and creative communicators—producing meaningful, student-authored podcasts that reflect diverse perspectives and real-world purpose.
