Event Information
I. Introduction & The Grounded AI Promise (5 min)
Hook: Start with a poll (e.g., Mentimeter) asking, "What is your #1 fear about using AI in the classroom?" (Expected answer: Hallucination/Bias).
Introduce NotebookLM's core value: 100% source grounding. Frame the session as moving from AI fear to AI fidelity by using your content as the expert.
II. Hands-On: Migrate Your Curriculum & Ground the AI (10 min)
Individual Device Activity & Peer-to-Peer: Attendees sign in to NotebookLM (if not already logged in). They follow Action Plan Step 1 by uploading 1-3 of their own curriculum files (PDF, Google Doc, or YouTube link).
Activity: Attendees upload their files and observe the instant Source Guide generation. Process: 2-minute "Think-Pair-Share" for attendees to discuss how this instant summary compares to their manual prep time.
III. Hands-On: Differentiation & Accessibility (15 min)
Modeling & Device-Based Creation: Model the intentional use of the "Notebook Guide" Studio features to address UDL principles (Indicator 4d).
Activity (Action Plan Step 2): Attendees use a single uploaded source to create two differentiated outputs: 1. A Podcast Audio Overview script/audio (for auditory/accessibility). 2. A Study Guide with 5 source-cited quiz questions (for active recall).
IV. Hands-On: Assessment & Interactive Scaffolding (15 min)
Challenge & Device-Based Creation: Challenge attendees to create high-level assessment materials.
Activity: Attendees use the Chat function to create: 1. A Rubric for a final project based only on the syllabus they uploaded. 2. A Counter-Argument Builder prompt (e.g., "Argue the opposite of the key findings in Source 1 and cite your evidence"). This demonstrates critical thinking and content mastery.
V. Synthesizing the Artifact & Action Planning (10 min)
Deployment Simulation & Wrap-Up: Guide attendees on how to deploy their new resources (sharing the Notebook or exporting the generated content).
Activity (Action Plan Step 3): Attendees finalize the three-part Learning Module Artifact (Study Guide, Multimedia Link, Notebook Access) and outline their personal 3-step Action Plan for immediate deployment in their classroom next week.
VI. Q&A and Next Steps (5 min)
Closing Contest: Quick summary of the 100% grounded model. Offer a quick "Smartest Question" contest prize for the best question about equitable AI implementation.
Review key takeaways and provide resources for continued learning.
Attendees will leave the session with a practical a completed Artifact—a fully-functional digital learning module, and an Action Plan that will be immediately deployable in their teaching or coaching environment
Artifact - Attendees will create a complete digital learning module centered on 2-3 of their own curriculum documents (e.g., syllabus, PDF article, video transcript). This module will contain three differentiated components:
1. Source-Grounded Study Guide & Assessment: A custom, AI-generated set of FAQs, quizzes, and discussion prompts, all explicitly cited back to the attendee's original uploaded files (their curriculum).
2. Multimedia Accessibility Piece (Podcast/Video): An automatically generated Audio Overview (Podcast) or a Video Overview script/outline of the uploaded content, providing an accessible, on-the-go review option for students.
3. A personalized research assistant (the NotebookLM interface itself) that is now an expert on the attendee's specific curriculum.
Action Plan - Attendees will create a complete digital learning module centered on 2-3 of their own curriculum documents (e.g., syllabus, PDF article, video transcript). This module will contain three differentiated components:
1. Migrate & Ground - Identify and upload 3-5 documents (complex texts, unit plans, etc.) into a new NotebookLM workspace.
2. Differentiate & Produce - Use the Notebook Studio feature to transform one complex text into at least two different learning modalities (e.g., podcast + quiz).
3. Deploy & Collect - Share the resulting links/files with class/team and identify a metric (e.g., student comprehension, time saved on prep) to track progress.
1. Universal Design for Learning Guidelines; CAST, Inc. (2018) - The session models the UDL principle of Multiple Means of Representation by instantly generating audio, visual, and textual resources from a single curriculum document.
2. Visible Learning: A Synthesis of Over 800 Meta-Analyses Relating to Achievement; Hattie, J. (2009) - NotebookLM, acting as an "expert on your curriculum," provides immediate, source-cited feedback and scaffolding via the chat function. Hattie's work validates the high impact of timely and specific feedback on student achievement.
3. Better Learning Through Structured Teaching: A Framework for the Gradual Release of Responsibility; Fisher, D., & Frey, N. (2014) - The session models fidelity of implementation. By demonstrating exact steps (The 3-Step Action Plan) for using the tool and explicitly connecting features to learning goals, the session ensures educators apply the technology in a high-quality, systematic way rather than random, shallow use.
