Session Outline: Success Starts Here: Literacy & Math that Meets the Moment
Total Time: 60 minutes (60-minute breakdown of the session):
0:00 – 5:00 | Welcome & Framing the Challenge
• Content: Introduce goals and importance of meeting students where they are in literacy and math.
• Engagement: Live poll (Mentimeter or Discovery Education Live Poll): “What’s your biggest challenge in literacy or math?”
• Process: Device-based responses displayed in real time.
5:00 – 20:00 | Literacy in Action: Collaborative Text Mapping
• Content: Share quick mini-lesson on using text maps to scaffold comprehension.
• Engagement:
1. Provide a short passage (digital PDF or Google Doc)/ as well as physical copies
2. Participants will form nearby groups and create a Collaborative Text Map showing main idea, supporting details, vocabulary, and structure.
3. Maps will be created digitally in Google Slides/Padlet/Canva Jamboard template or on chart paper.
• Process: Small-group collaboration, then groups post their maps digitally for a mini “gallery view.”
• Takeaway: A ready-to-use visual scaffold template for reading comprehension.
20:00 – 35:00 | Math in Action: Concept Circles
• Content: Introduce Concept Circles as a tool for connecting abstract and real-world math ideas.
• Engagement:
1. Participants will be give a math strand (choices: fractions, place value, multiplication, etc.).
2. They will then create a Math Concept Circle with four sections: key term, visual model, real-world example, and equation/problem.
3. Participants can build/ work on the circles digitally, or physically on paper.
• Process: Groups share circles in a short digital gallery walk (upload/post).
• Takeaway: A replicable template to help students visualize and connect math concepts.
35:00 – 45:00 | Jigsaw Share: Equity & Inclusion
• Content: As a group, we will spotlight strategies that are beneficial for multilingual learners, students with exceptionalities, and those with gaps.
• Engagement: Small groups each discuss one strategy, then “teach back” key takeaways in a Jigsaw Share.
• Takeaway: A shared digital resource deck of inclusive practices will be shared on the Padlet.
45:00 – 55:00 | PLN Building & Action Planning
• Content: As the session to near conclusion, I will stress the importance of professional learning networks.
• Engagement:
o Turn-and-talk: “Which strategy will you try tomorrow?”
o Add names/social handles to a Padlet PLN board for continued networking.
• Takeaway: A PLN connection and a concrete mini-plan for classroom use.
55:00 – 60:00 | Closing & Call to Action
• Content: Summarize strategies, reinforce the message: Success begins at each student’s starting point.
• Engagement: Quick exit poll or word cloud (Mentimeter or Discovery Education Live Poll): “What’s your #1 takeaway?”
• Tech Tool: Digital word cloud for visual wrap-up.
• Takeaway: Clear next steps + visual snapshot of collective learning.
After this session, participants will be able to design responsive literacy and math experiences that begin with each learner’s current skills and build toward measurable growth. They will practice strategies such as scaffolding, differentiation, and purposeful technology integration to engage diverse learners. Attendees will collaborate through Turn & Talk discussions and live polls to deepen understanding. Additionally, to extend their learning community, participants will also build a professional learning network by sharing their names and social media handles on a Padlet for ongoing collaboration beyond the session. By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical tools, inclusive practices, and ready-to-use strategies that can be implemented immediately to improve student outcomes.
