Session description

Provide an ethical coaching model for integrating AI as a student "inquiry partner" in major PBL projects, such as a culminating PYP Exhibition. Focus on advanced skills to guide question refinement, challenge AI outputs, and foster agency. Leave with the AI Coaching Framework.

Outline

Content and engagement: Introduce the PBL inquiry challenge and the need for AI coaching. Present the 3-step AI Coaching Sequence (Define Role, Challenge Output, Refine Inquiry). Engage audience with a live demonstration of applying the Challenge Output step to a common student research question. Time: Introduction/Goal Setting (5 min); Presenting 3-step Model (15 min); Live Demo & Peer Discussion (5 min); Q&A/Handout (5 min). Process: Active polling on current AI challenges. Peer-to-peer discussion (3 min) during the demo segment to apply the model to their own student scenarios. Handout provided digitally for immediate use.

Outcomes

Purpose: To provide elementary educators with ethical, high-impact strategies for using Generative AI as a scaffold and co-pilot during the complex, high-stakes PYP Exhibition or other major PBL projects. Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1. Identify 3 key ethical "guardrails" for student AI use in long-term projects. 2. Formulate an ethical prompt to help a student refine a PBL question. 3. Coach a student through the "AI-enhanced reflection" phase of a project.
After this session, participants will be able to apply a ready-to-use, repeatable 3-step coaching sequence and accompanying scripts to guide student use of AI in PBL (PBL, Exhibition), ensuring critical thinking and agency.
