Session description

Keep your cool when the heat is on! So much of our job success depends on the strength of our communication. This session will sharpen your communication skills, provide you with tools to manage difficult discussions, and equip you to navigate even the toughest conversations with confidence.

Outline

Introduction (10 Minutes): Communication must be rooted in care, especially for tough conversations. We will share information regarding this, along with strategies to show care for the adults you serve. Participants will then do a “musical partners” activity where they discuss and share a strategy they use or plan to start using. They switch partners every time the music stops.

Strategies to Remain Calm and Deescalate Others (20 Minutes): This section shares the contagion of emotions, how to remain in control of our response, and sentence stems and strategies to diffuse others. We will engage in a table talk exercise to discuss application specific to the environments participants are coming from.

How to Plan for a Successful Conversation (20 Minutes): This section focuses on how to ensure you are set up for successful communication when you need to engage in a challenging conversation. It includes a planning guide, sentence stems, and specific strategies to use to maximize the opportunity for success. Participants will have the opportunity to use the planning guide for an upcoming conversation they are planning for, and time to discuss.

Tying it all together (10 Minutes): We will end with some time that allows all participants to consider how they will apply the skills learned, and some time for question and answer.
