Transform oral stories into interactive digital and physical narratives that build empathy, SEL, and data literacy. Explore ways to connect community and environmental data with cultural storytelling using Scratch, Book Creator, Micro:bit, Paper Circuity and StoryMaps to design inquiry-driven, student-centered STEAM projects that inspire Community Science.

Storytelling as a bridge to empathy, SEL, inquiry, and data literacy

Connecting community science, climate action, and cultural narratives to student voice and civic engagement

Oral Storytelling → Digital Narratives Strand (15 min)

Capture and analyze oral stories from family, community, or cultural traditions

Transform narratives into digital creations using Scratch, iMovie, Book Creator, or StoryMapJS

Reflection prompts to foster empathy and connection to community perspectives

Community Science & Data Literacy Strand (20 min)

Collect, analyze, and interpret local environmental or cultural data (water quality, flooding, biodiversity, surveys)

Create statistical stories and digital/physical narratives using ArcGIS StoryMaps, Canva, Micro:bit, Flipgrid, or Paper Circuitry

Scaffold inquiry, collaboration, visualization, and reflective thinking

SEL, Equity, & Empathy Integration (10 min)

Embed empathy, self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship skills into projects

Amplify marginalized voices and honor cultural knowledge through storytelling and data narratives

Reflection activities connect personal experiences, data insights, and community perspectives

Sharing & Amplifying (10 min)

Publish student narratives to engage families, peers, local organizations, and civic partners

Connect projects to climate action and UN SDGs

Reflection & Takeaways (5 min)
