Event Information
What You'll Experience
Welcome & Framing:
We'll begin by exploring how photography can serve as a pathway to social-emotional learning, student voice, and belonging. You'll be invited to reflect on a young person you hope to better understand and consider how authentic experiences, reflection, and belonging can transform learning.
Experience the Activity: Range of Feelings:
You'll participate in one of 100cameras' signature photography-based SEL activities, collaborating with fellow attendees to sort photographs along an emotional continuum. As you discuss, negotiate, and reflect together, you'll experience firsthand how photography can foster observation, perspective-taking, empathy, and meaningful dialogue.
Reflection & Dialogue:
You'll choose a photograph that resonates with you, complete a guided reflection, and share your insights with a partner. Together, we'll explore how visual storytelling creates safe entry points for emotional literacy, student voice, and authentic conversation.
The 100cameras Methodology in Practice:
We'll step back to unpack the experience using the 100cameras framework:
Observe → Discuss → Reflect → Connect
You'll discover how this methodology aligns with ISTE Standards and Transformational Learning Principles, while hearing powerful student stories that illustrate how photography cultivates belonging, elevates reflection, and creates authentic learning experiences across classrooms, after-school programs, museums, and youth-serving organizations.
Closing Reflection & Resources:
You'll leave by identifying one student or learning community that could benefit from this approach and receive practical take-away resources to continue exploring photography as a pathway to social-emotional learning. You'll also have opportunities to connect with the 100cameras team to learn more about our curriculum, educator training, and implementation support.
After this session, participants will be able to:
- Articulate how photography can serve as an accessible entry point to social-emotional learning by fostering observation, reflection, empathy, and student voice.
- Explain how structured photography experiences can create psychologically safe opportunities for students to explore emotions, perspectives, and lived experiences through authentic storytelling.
- Identify practical opportunities to integrate photography-based reflection into existing educational settings—including classrooms, advisory, counseling, arts, after-school, and youth development programs—to cultivate belonging and elevate reflection.
