Session description

Custom AI chatbots are a powerful way to provide safe, monitored, personalized learning experiences for students, including historical figure interviews, book discussions, writing process assistance, tutoring, reflecting, or exploring any topic. We will test out multiple AI tools with pre-made student chatbots and the option to create our own.

Outline

The session will cover the following information. Note: live links to the resources referenced below can be accessed at:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RnPSG4TWL6Cz4AnlQkQzay0hCogOcZlwLlIHmsrTV5Q/edit

If this session is a longer lab session, then more tools and examples will be covered.

1) Overview (5 minutes) Exploration of what a custom AI chatbot is, as well as the benefits and challenges of using such a tool.
2) Whole-Class Examples (20 minutes) Hands-on live activities where we explore using a customized chatbot for a whale-class activity. This will include interviewing the AI chatbot as if it was a historical figure, character from a book, animal, object, or such, using the custom AI chatbot for a class debate on a subject-related topic, and using the custom AI chatbot for whole-class educational learning games.
3) Individual Student Use (35 minutes) Here we will explore tools that allow students to individually interact with the custom AI chatbot, set up by the teacher, in a school-safe, monitored environment. We will explore several free tools that support such activities including SchoolAI, MagicSchool, Brisk Teaching, and custom Gemini Gems. With the rapid development of AI tools it is possible that the specific tools covered in this portion may change. The mechanics of using such tools will be covered, and then attendees will take time to interact with several custom chatbots as if they were students.

Attendees will be engaged throughout the entire session by actively participating in the whole group examples and in the individual activities.

Supporting research

Artificial intelligence in education is a new and rapidly growing field so there will be much research to come on this topic. However many of the AI tools and personalized learning activities I will be demonstrating in this session are backed by research. John Hattie's "Visible Learning" studies help identify the top positive influences on student achievement as detailed at https://www.visiblelearningmetax.com/Influences
Some of the top positive influences that can be implemented and extended with custom AI chatbots include:
Feedback
Summarization
Help seeking
Outlining and summarizing
Self-directed learning
Technology with learning needs students
Intelligent tutoring systems
Coding
Questioning
Differentiation
Technology in writing

Additionally I have learned from and built upon the excellent writing of my educational colleagues including:
Brave New Words - Salman Khan
Co-Intelligence - Ethan Mollick
AI for Educators - Matt Miller
The AI Classroom - Dan Fitzpatrick
The AI Infused Classroom - Holly Clark
