Session description
Drop by the Creativity Crossroads Studio to create a paper Vejigante mask with local artist and educator Lilly Carrasquillo! Vejigante masks are vibrant, horned, and colorful, representing mischievous, folkloric, and protective spirits in Puerto Rican festivals. Check out some of Lilly’s own enchanting mask artwork, watch some traditional technique demonstrations, and learn about the cultural roots of these famous masks from Puerto Rico. Inspired by designs from two historic neighborhoods—Barrio Bélgica and Barrio La Playa—participants will create their own paper version, choosing animal-inspired features and colorful embellishments to make it uniquely their own.
Work side by side with fellow creators in this drop-in art-making workshop– stay for 10 minutes, an hour, or more, to make and create your own paper mask while learning about the art and culture of Puerto Rico. Plus, Lilly will share resources, suggestions, and tips for leading your own mask-making activity with your students!
