Historical Context & Foodways Introduction (10 min)
Content: Short presentation on African culinary traditions, the Middle Passage, and transformations through slavery, migration, and the Civil Rights Movement.
Engagement: Use images, maps, and short video clips to illustrate history and culture visually.
Process: Participants share quick “think-pair-share” on foods in their family/culture that carry history or meaning.
Google Earth Middle Passage Activity (15 min)
Content: Model how to use Google Earth to trace the Middle Passage routes and link them to foodways and cultural diffusion.
Engagement: Participants complete a short mapping activity on their own devices.
Process: Partner discussions to interpret routes and historical connections.
Teaching Strategies & Lesson Design (20 min)
Content: Share ready-to-use lesson templates that integrate foodways, hard histories, and student-centered activities.
