5 minutes: Warm-Up/Poll
Quick Poll “Who’s in the room” to understand the audience.
Presenter will use an online polling platform to capture: What one skill do students most need for future success? (results create a word cloud to generate discussion)
5 minutes: Overview of the session
Define session objectives and present career and job data showing the high demand for durable skills over technical knowledge, highlighting the durable skills jobs gap.
10 minutes: One division’s story
Brief overview of how our division (Henrico County Public Schools) has used the profile of a graduate to inspire innovation and develop durable skills. This section will draw direct connections between durable skills and the ISTE standards.
3 minutes: Pair-Share Activity
Participants engage in a Quick peer-to-peer interaction to discuss: "What is one project/lesson you currently do that already hits both a durable skill and an ISTE standard?"
15 minutes Measuring Durable skill Growth
The presenter will introduce and explain the durable skill progression charts and self-reflection rubrics we have developed and how they work other initiatives like student-led conferences and public presentations of learning to help students develop durable skills. Participants will use one of the provided self-reflection templates to reflect with an elbow partner on their own strengths.
5 minutes Audience self-reflection and peer share.
Self-Assessment tool: Participants will complete a self-assessment of their own strengths in durable skills and then discuss the results with an elbow partner.
10 minutes: Using AI tools to boost Durable Skills
The presenter will then explain how the self-assessment was created using AI tools (custom GPTs and AI-created code) to provide personalized feedback to students. Presenter will share resources and recommendations for participants to create their own resources.
5 minutes: Open Q&A and Brainstorm
Dedicated time for attendees to ask questions and brainstorm ideas for their own local circumstances.
2 minutes: Call to Action/Resource Distribution
Presenter shares a single resource link that includes the presentation slides and resources from the presentation
1. Analyze the direct connection between durable skills and the ISTE Standards for Students and Educators, allowing them to identify specific instructional targets that foster both skill sets alongside content knowledge.
2. Utilize a Durable Skills Proficiency Progression tool to set clear, measurable learning goals for students, assessing how well they are demonstrating skills like Perseverance or Flexible Thinking across grade levels.
3. Design a reflective assessment strategy, leveraging AI tools, that integrates student self-assessment and feedback on durable skill growth.
