Event Information
Welcome (15 minutes)
Sharing of information among participants (i.e. where they are from on an interactive map). Simple on-table activity to meet/get to know the other participants at their table, and a pre-session quick questionnaire.
Introductions of Facilitators, Goals and Expectations, Introduction of participants
Introduction to the TLPs and ISTE+ASCD
Foundational understanding of AI, setting the vision, Profile of an AI-Ready Graduate (30 min)
Presentation that includes information about AI as well as hands-on practice with AI tools.
Practical uses of AI - 5 use cases in education (30 min)
This is a table activity that will allow participants to engage with AI tools in alignment with the various attributes of the Profile of an AI-Ready Graduate. They prompt AI tools using relevant topics and activities that allow them to see the power of AI in expanding and improving their work.
AI and Transformational Learning (15 min)
Participants will watch a video about Heman Bekele, Time Kid of the Year, who created skin-cancer curing soap. They will then engage in a table activity where they do a close read of the TLPs and connect the experiences of Heman Bekele to the TLPs. They will then consider uses of AI that move past efficiency into transformational learning.
Engaging with AI Literacy (30 min)
Now that participants have an idea of the power of AI and how it can be used to transform teaching and learning, we will share with them some of the foundational concepts about AI literacy. We will challenge their beliefs about the definition of cheating and help them consider the role of AI in academic integrity. We will also explore the various biases inherent in AI and help them understand how and why AI hallucinates.
Case Studies (30 min)
Participants will work as table groups to choose from among 6 different case studies that allow them to see some of the potential benefits and risks of AI in education. They will read the case studies and have table discussions about how they would handle the various challenges in their roles.
Reflection, Next Steps, and Call to Action (20 minutes)
Sharing thoughts and ideas via an online site/document which can be referenced and updated after the conference.
Evaluation (10 minutes)
Participants complete a short questionnaire about their experience in the forum
By the end of the preconference, participants will:
-Gain a refreshed knowledge of promising practices on the use of artificial intelligence
-Have deeper knowledge and ideas for applying the ISTE Standards to artificial intelligence activities that effectively integrate technology to empower PK-20 learners
-Gain insights into familiar and/or new ways to use artificial intelligence in the PK-20 classroom
-Consider the role of artificial intelligence in transforming the learning experience for students
-Be able to implement new strategies, formats, approaches to AI use with students.
The ideas presented in this preconference session represent the view of ISTE+ASCD on the use of artificial intelligence in schools. It is also supported by the AILit Framework published by TeachAI.
