Session description

Adolescents are among the most susceptible to technology dependence and the effects that they have on mental health. This workshop will guide attendees through our media wellbeing series. This pairs youth-facing/youth-created videos with activities that allow students to come to their own conclusions and promote real change.

Outline

10 Minutes: present research on how social media and tech-dependancy affect social and functional development.

10 Minutes: watch student-led videos that detail issues such as dopamine, fear of missing out, algorithms and more.

20 Minutes: Interactive lesson designed for students to reflect on how social media and technology affect their lives.

10 Minutes: workshop time to scale activities to various age groups or address other learning needs.

10 Minutes: Q&A and wrap up.

Outcomes

After this session, participants will be able to talk to students about various aspects of media wellbeing and and adjust/design classroom exercises relevant for the age groups that they engage with. Additionally, participants will receive access to and experience implementing student-facing media and lesson plans that encourage reflection and understanding of how technology and social media shape us.
