Event Information
This fast-paced 30-minute Turbo Talk provides educators with an actionable blueprint to fuse Art, Music, Coding, and Maker Education. The session begins with a high-energy hook (3 min), followed by a rapid-fire demonstration of the 3-step project roadmap (12 min) using Makey Makey and Scratch to transform low-cost materials into functional sound robotics. The audience will immediately apply these concepts in a peer-to-peer "Design Challenge" (10 min). The session concludes by discussing the project's equitable impact and providing a replicable project outline template and a resource-rich Google Site (5 min) for instant implementation.
This Turbo Talk directly addresses Connect learning to learner and Prioritize authentic experiences. We achieve this by demonstrating a Project-Based Learning (PBL) model where students design and build unique musical controllers, ensuring the learning is personalized and deeply relevant to their artistic interests. This is an authentic experience in digital fabrication and Design Thinking, as participants learn to guide students in solving a real-world challenge—transforming low-cost materials into functional, programmable sound robotics—delivering a meaningful and memorable learning process.
This project is grounded in established educational research supporting Transformational Learning and Equity. Core backing includes Mitchel Resnick's constructionism and the 4 P's of Creative Learning from the MIT Lifelong Kindergarten group (see Lifelong Kindergarten: Cultivating Creativity at https://direct.mit.edu/books/book/3134/Lifelong-KindergartenCultivating-Creativity). The implementation strategies are deeply rooted in PBLWorks resources (https://www.pblworks.org/resources-overview) and the Design Thinking process, with guidance from the Stanford d.school's Design Thinking Bootleg (https://dschool.stanford.edu/tools/design-thinking-bootleg). The hands-on technology is supported by the official Makey Makey resources (https://makeymakey.com/), and the focus on equity and practical application aligns with Maker Ed initiatives on assessment and implementation (https://makered.org/resources/). Further practical resources, including my international conference presentations, are available on my Google Site (https://sites.google.com/view/profesofiagimenez/).
