Session description

Many teachers turn to social media for learning, especially around AI and edtech. This session helps PD and tech coaches create micro-PD that blends innovation with research-based practice, encouraging risk-taking, trust, and credibility in both formal and informal learning spaces.

Outline

Introduction & Hook (5 minutes):
Content: Share real examples of teachers learning through social media (polls, videos, trending reels).
Engagement: Live audience poll using Mentimeter/Slido about where participants learn most about new tech.
Process: Audience devices, immediate results shown.

Context & Research (10 minutes):
Content: Present current data on social media as professional learning and its intersection with research-based practices.
Engagement: Turn-and-talk on participants’ own experiences.
Process: Peer-to-peer reflection.

Exploring Social Media Micro-PD (15 minutes):
Content: Show examples of TikTok, Instagram, YouTube micro-PD clips.
Engagement: Small groups analyze which examples are innovative, which are research-based, and how to improve them.
Process: Group collaboration, shared on Padlet or Jamboard.

Hands-On Creation Lab (20 minutes):
Content: Participants create their own micro-PD artifact (draft video script, post, infographic) blending innovation with research.
Engagement: Work in pairs or trios; use templates provided.
Process: Peer coaching and feedback built in.

Action Plan & Reflection (10 minutes):
Content: Guide participants to draft a short action plan on how to use social media as a PD tool in their schools.
Engagement: Share one commitment or next step aloud or via digital exit ticket.
Process: Reflection, peer accountability.

Closing (Optional 2–3 minutes if time permits):
Content: Highlight examples of diverse educator voices to reinforce inclusivity.
Engagement: Quick share of resources (QR code link to templates and tools).

Outcomes

Attendees will leave with a practical action plan for integrating social media into their PD strategies, along with a draft micro-PD artifact (such as a sample Instagram post, TikTok video script, or quick-reference guide) they can adapt and implement immediately in their schools.
