Join the University of Indianapolis’ presentation for the strategies we have implemented to attract, prepare, and retain teachers in our 11 partnering school districts. Learn how we are building a supportive pathway into the teaching profession for all students while working to elevate the status of the teaching profession.

Outcomes:

After this session, participants will have: *Gained strategies and actionable items to improve teacher recruitment and retention by building a supportive pathway into teaching. *Learn strategies and actionable items to create and implement a teacher prep academy for high school students interested in the teaching profession. *Discovered strategies and actionable items to create and implement a paid apprenticeship program where college teacher education candidates can return to their K-12 districts to work as paraprofessionals while completing their college field requirements.

Dr. Elizabeth Turner

Director of Undergraduate Studies

University of Indianapolis

Dr. Libby Turner is the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Education at the University of Indianapolis. She specializes in reading, technology, instructional improvement, organizational development, and leadership. Service remains important to Libby. She is a former Executive Director, State Coordinator, and President of the Indiana Literacy Association. At UIndy, she co-authored and authored a million dollars worth of grants to embed STEM learning programs and to attract and retain teachers. She also created the first embedded study abroad program for UIndy. Libby, her husband Mark, and their three children, Alexandria, Nathaniel, and Patrick reside in Indianapolis.

Katrina Reinhardt

Assistant Professor of Practice

University of Indianapolis

Katrina Reinhardt is an assistant professor of practice in the School of Education at the University of Indianapolis. For more than a decade she has served UIndy students by teaching introductory, literacy, and EL courses, arranging fieldwork, coaching teachers, and coordinating the secondary education program. She is currently enrolled as an EdD candidate at Indiana University for Literacy, Culture and Language Education where she is researching how teachers are prepared to teach ELs in the general education classroom.

Kelley Carnagua

Teacher Recruitment Grant Project Manage

University of Indianapolis

Kelley Carnagua is the Teacher Recruitment Grant Manager at the University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her role at UIndy is to aid in building a supportive pathway into teaching with our 11 partnering school districts. Kelley coordinates between the University and partnering school districts to expand dual credit opportunities and support the apprenticeship program. She has created and implemented a Teacher Prep Academy for students who are interested in the teaching profession. Kelley works with a team of University faculty and a marketing agency on a campaign to establish a positive public image of the teaching profession.
