Session description

How can AI-powered storytelling spark students' excitement to learn? SceneCraft – a tool from the NSF-funded EngageAI Institute – turns teacher prompts into immersive narratives designed to captivate students and fuel learning. Build your own story, engage in conversation around AI and storytelling, and explore classroom applications.

Outline

* Learner-hat: Participants play though a story generated by SceneCraft and discuss with peers how stories can increase learner engagement (15 minutes)
* SceneCraft and EngageAI introduction: Presenter shares background on AI and its use in building an immersive story, including a demo of what happens when a teacher doesn’t stay in the loop (15 minutes)
* SceneCraft Exploration: Participants are given a chance to create their first story in the authoring tool, guided through each step, and are encouraged to share what they are doing with peers. (40 minutes)
* SceneCraft in the Classroom: Mix of peer conversations and presentation to generate ideas of concrete ways it might be used with students to spark excitement for learning and meet instructional need. (15 minutes)
* Wrap up and other resources: Participants reflect on their stories and presenter shares other ways to engage with the work of EngageAI and SceneCraft (5 minutes)

Outcomes

This session is designed to be hands-on. Participants will explore different ways to use a story in their classroom as a tool for student engagement and take back tangible ideas to increase student interest and excitement for learning. Educators will have an opportunity to put their ideas in action as they make their first story during the session.
