Event Information
I. Welcome & Introductions (5 minutes) – Presenter will gather and share information about the teacher, classroom, school, district, higher education and other leaders in the presentation. Participants will do a 2-minute quick write about their current instructional leadership goals.
II. The Five Rules of Leadership (5 segments) – The presenter will share the rules of instructional leadership to help guide leaders in their leadership planning. For each rule, the presenter will provide a planning tool/template for use by leaders.
a. Practicing Ambitious Realism (15 minutes) – The presenter will discuss the importance of setting meaningful and appropriately ambitious goals for all students. Leaders will work with a partner to identify examples and non-examples of practicing ambitious realism.
b. Having No Shame (15 minutes) – The presenter will provide guidance on analyzing gaps in curriculum, instruction, equity, and professional knowledge. Leaders will use a checklist to identify the key gaps they perceive in instruction in their schools.
c. Acting Like the Sun (15 minutes) – The presenter will work with leaders to identify ways of providing effective support and accountability for improvements in instruction.
d. Creating a Learning Lifestyle (15 minutes) – The presenter will provide a checklist of key elements of curriculum and instruction. Leaders will work independently or with a team to identify the elements that should be prioritized in their schools.
e. Telling the Story (10 minutes) - The presenter will provide a menu of ways for instructional leaders to build communication of successes into their work.
IV. Where Do We Go From Here? (10 minutes) – Leaders will do a brief self-assessment to determine on which rules they should focus in the short, moderate, and long term.
