Session description

The real issue with AI is finding ways to get teachers to embrace it. This session shows how we introduced AI to our K-12th grade staff over the past year. We will discuss the apps we showcased to our faculty and discuss the sequence in which we presented materials and why.

Outline

AI came at teachers hard and fast. Teachers were immediately inundated with a wide variety of AI generators and applications. As an Instructional Technology Coach at a pre-k through 12th grade public charter school in Atlanta, it became my task to sift through all of this random technology and create a coherent and logical plan and to deliver this new technology to the faculty in a way that presented AI as practical and accessible without overwhelming our staff. This presentation will show participants our AI implementation and adoption strategy that can be utilized by a single teacher or an entire district, and it is the plan that I utilized at our public charter school system for pre-k through 12th grade.
20 min- The first portion of the presentation will focus on an introduction to AI and ChatGPT. Participants will receive a brief overview of AI and how it works. I will also provide links to several informative YouTube videos for participants who would like to take a deeper dive into these matters on their own. We will then move into a discussion about ChatGPT. It was the first artificial intelligence platform to go public, and it became the platform for many other programs initially. Text to text generators are the best place to start when discussing AI because they can be applied to all classes. We will look at how ChatGPT can be used in a wide variety of situations in the classroom and then move into the strengths of other text to text generators. For example, our teachers use ChatGPT for creative and text based activities, but our elementary teachers use Co-pilot to create coloring book pages based upon stories that our students create in ChatGPT.
20 min The second portion of the presentation will mirror my 2nd professional development meeting about AI with the staff and introduce different generators in attempt to encourage playful exploration amongst the participants. ‘Leg godt,’ is Danish for ‘play well,’ and it is where we get the term ‘Lego.’ We will look at several text to image generators as well as Adobe’s generative fill to demonstrate how text to text generators mirror what happens with generative fill. There will also be demonstrations for various audio generators such as ElevenLabs and Musicfy. In addition, I will show how ElevenLabs can be used to provide read aloud elements for SWD students. Finally, during the ‘Fun AI’ portion, we will look at how AI is generating serious dilemmas for the music industry.
20 min Once participants have a basic understanding of how AI works and how they can utilize various generators, we will move into the final area of our rollout- AI designed specifically for the classroom. This will include a listing of some of the more popular classroom AI tools and what they are used for. For example, we will look at Magic School and discuss how our Special Education teachers are using it as well as our traditional classroom teachers as well.
Due to the fact that AI is changing rapidly, the outline for this presentation will remain constant, but new additions and changes in specific fields may need to be altered or addressed. I have presented this presentation with our pre-K through 12th grade staff already. All of the information as well as supplemental materials will be available for participants.

Supporting research

I have been studying AI for the past year. I completed ISTE U's Artificial Intelligence for Educators course (Spring 2024). I attended AI sessions exclusively at Ga ETC, FETC, and ISTE. I have also read and utilized the following books for this presentation: Co-Intelligence, The Promises and Perils of AI in Education, ThAI Classroom, and The AI Infused Classroom. Also, I am a member of the AI for Equity Cohort that meets monthly to monitor and discuss AI and its evolution.
