Session description

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been around us for quite a while now. Lately, generative AI has gained more attention due to its ease of access and use. One might see it as a threat, but come learn a bit more about the opportunities for English Language Learners (ELL) classes.

Outline

The purpose of this session is to discuss how generative artificial intelligence can be included in ELL classes. We have been creating experiences that involve both English Language Learning and artificial intelligence since 2020, and lately we have included more experiences dealing with generative AI. The activities have been tried out by teachers at an English Language private institute, with students of various ages and language levels. Students have shown great interest in better understanding AI, its effects on our daily lives and how they can deal with and use AI now and in the future. During this session, participants will explore practical applications of AI in language learning, fostering digital literacy, and enhancing the learning experience for students.

First we will go over a brief introduction of AI in education and discuss the benefits and challenges of using AI in the classroom.I will then showcase AI-powered language learning tools and platforms and share examples of real classroom implementations. Then we will have some time for questions and discussion, when participants will be able to share their experiences and concerns. Participants will leave this session with a list of resources and ideas for further exploration.
