Session description

Teacher empowerment and instructional innovation start with learning communities in which educators know that effective teaching is about continuous improvement rather than perfection. This session shares a new instructional design and evaluation framework, rough draft teaching, that prioritizes teacher agency to facilitate instructional transformation.

Outline

5 minutes: Presenter welcome and introductions.
10 minutes: Attendees will collaborate with each other to critically consider the affordances and constraints of traditional instruction design and evaluation cycles.
5 minutes: Attendees will share dreams and aspirations for what teaching and evaluation in the ideal world would look like and feel like.
15 minutes: We will present the rough draft teaching and evaluation framework. Attendees will engage with our rubrics.
10 minutes: The bigger picture: Discussion around bringing the components of rough draft teaching together.
10 minutes: Attendees will collaborate to brainstorm ways of applying the rough draft teaching and evaluation framework within their schools. Barriers to implementation will be explicitly addressed.
5 minutes: Questions, comments, clarifications, closing thoughts, and thank you for attending.

Lesson Study: This book by Akihito Takahashi and Geoffery wake brings together teachers from the US and UK to participate in their adaptation of Lesson Study. This book provides insights into how teachers, coaches, and administrators can engage in this form of professional learning and evaluation.
