Session description

This session will demonstrate how virtual reality and participatory science can enhance rigor in STEM education. Attendees will explore VR's application in teaching complex topics like anatomy, neuroscience, and ecosystems, and gain strategies for integrating immersive technology to deepen engagement, critical thinking, and real-world scientific contributions in the classroom.

Outline

Introduction to syGlass and Immersive Learning (10 minutes):

Content: Overview of syGlass VR technology and its applications in STEM education, with specific focus on Health and environmental science.
Engagement: Showcase syGlass in action, highlighting real-world applications, including how students engage with complex scientific concepts in virtual reality.

Incorporating Rigor in VR-Enhanced STEM Lessons (15 minutes):

Content: Strategies for creating rigorous, interdisciplinary lessons using VR technology that challenge students' critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
Engagement: Attendees will participate in a group activity where they collaborate to design a VR-based lesson plan focused on deep, inquiry-driven learning outcomes.

Fostering Equity and Inclusion in the Immersive Classroom (10 minutes):

Content: Discuss ways to ensure equitable access to technology, and how VR can be used to create inclusive learning environments.

Engagement: Interactive discussion on barriers to access and strategies to overcome them. Participants will brainstorm how VR could benefit their specific student populations.
Hands-on Activity: Developing a Participatory Science Project with syGlass (20 minutes):

Content: Guide attendees through the creation of a citizen science project utilizing syGlass VR, incorporating real-time data collection and analysis.
Engagement: Attendees will actively design their own project, aligning it with learning standards and incorporating immersive experiences.
Assessing Student Learning and Providing Feedback in VR Environments (10 minutes):

Content: Explore methods for tracking and assessing student progress within VR, as well as providing actionable feedback.
Engagement: Participants will review and modify sample assessment tools, applying them to the projects they’ve developed during the session.
