Session description

Uncover layers of Texan history, art, and nature while exploring how emerging technologies can enhance place-based learning. Perfect for educators seeking inspiration to create engaging, tech-integrated experiences for their students in the classroom and beyond.

Outline

We will greet our walkers and introduce ourselves and the objectives in a whole group setting. We will encourage some connection-building before setting off by including meaningful icebreakers and do some whole-group polling to find out who is familiar with some of what we’ll be experiencing, both in terms of the technology used and sites visited for about 15 minutes. Then, starting at the Convention Center, we will set off on a walk around several of San Antonio’s attractions like the Alamo, the Riverwalk, and many art and historic markers. This 1.4 mile will take about 80 minutes, in which participants will learn through Augmented reality, interactive QR codes, Geolocated audio narrations, and collaborative digital scavenger hunt using mobile devices. We plan to incorporate some “choose your own adventure” connection building activities to encourage networking and modeling universal design principles.

When we return to the convention center, with the remaining 20 minutes or so, the facilitators will guide participants through resources we used to develop the tour, so they leave with actionable strategies they can bring back to use with students to design highly engaging, place-based learning. We will also provide a digital reference guide for those who need to get to their next destination.
