Session description

In the era of AI, developing uniquely human skills like critical thinking and civil discourse is paramount. Game-based learning fosters these skills and nurtures civic values. This session explores how civics tabletop games can promote empathy, critical thinking, and problem-solving in a fun and engaging way.

Outline

Introduction (5 minutes): In a brief presentation, we will review the importance of civic education and the power of play.

The Benefits of Play for Civic Education (10 minutes): Discuss the characteristics of learning through play and why they make learning effective, particularly for civic education.

Game Demonstrations (20 minutes): Participants will play examples of games that have successfully fostered civic understanding, engagement, and civil discourse.

Facilitating Discussions and Activities (10 minutes): We will provide strategies for leading discussions and activities that enrich the educational value of play.

Group Discussion (15 minutes): Participants will share experiences and ideas for using games in their classrooms in small and whole group settings.
