Session description

Integration of CRP and Transactional Reading, focusing on how these approaches transform reading instruction for students of color. Evaluate the principles of CRP to create an inclusive curriculum. Dive into the reader’s role in constructing meaning through cultural experiences. Attendees will learn strategies integrating these frameworks to foster critical thinking.

Outline

1. Introduction to Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Transactional Reading Theory (15 minutes)

Overview of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Transactional Reading Theory. Brief poll asking attendees about their current use of culturally relevant materials in their curriculum. Attendees will share their initial thoughts on how students respond emotionally to the literature they teach. Attendees will reflect on their current practices and how they align with CRP or Transactional Reading Theory. Attendees will discuss how their student population reflects diverse cultural backgrounds, and how do they currently address this in teaching practices.

2. Applying CRP and Transactional Reading in the Classroom (20 minutes).

Practical strategies for incorporating diverse texts and using students' cultural contexts to foster personal connections with literature. Equip educators with tools to apply CRP and Transactional Reading Theory in selecting texts and designing reading activities. Attendees will be divided into small groups and given sample texts. Each group will analyze how a given text can be taught using both CRP and Transactional Reading Theory. Attendees will share insights from their text analysis with the larger group. Educators will collaborate to evaluate culturally relevant texts, identifying potential connections between the students' identities and the reading material. Attendees will exchange teaching strategies and reflect on how to foster deeper student engagement through these frameworks.

3. Designing Authentic Learning Experiences (15 minutes).

Focus on empowering students as designers and creators. Show how CRP and Transactional Reading Theory can be used to design meaningful, authentic assessments. Attendees will brainstorm project-based learning opportunities that allow students to connect literature with their personal and cultural experiences. Participants will submit their project ideas in real-time to a collaborative document for group sharing. Interactive brainstorming session focused on developing project ideas for performance-based assessments. Educators will draft a project-based assignment and share it with a partner for feedback.

4. Facilitating Critical Discussions (10 minutes)

Teach participants how to facilitate meaningful dialogue that encourages students to reflect on societal structures. Participants will work in pairs to develop discussion prompts and practice facilitating a brief discussion on a sample text.
