Session description

Participants will experience Historic Market Square, the largest Mexican market in the United States. They will learn the history of the market, see famous murals, explore the Centro de Artes museum, and participate in a shop scavenger hunt. This tour will demonstrate unconventional, enriching activities outside a typical college classroom.

Outline

Orientation- 5 minutes. Discuss what I do with my students here at Market Square (what they will be doing today)

History of Market Square chat - 10 minutes. Participants will be given a cloze notes sheet to help them engage and understand the background of the location.

Centro de Artes activity: - 30 minutes. Participants will be asked to explore both floors of the museum and find 3 pieces of interest that they can photograph (explaining that my students would be asked to research the artists/pieces and report back in class)

Muralist activity - 25 minutes. Participants will learn about the Mexican-American muralist Jesse Trevino https://www.expressnews.com/projects/2023/visuals/jesse-trevino-death-murals/ They will see at least two of his murals that are visible from Market Square (3 if there is extra time). Participants will attempt a sketch of the main mural with their non-dominant hands to further understand the difficulties faced by the artist, who lost his dominant hand in Vietnam.

Scavenger hunt - 45 minutes. Participants will break into 3 teams for a scavenger hunt on the free app GooseChase. The scavenger hunt will introduce them to various cultural items sold around the market, as well as new Spanish-language vocabulary. If the conference could provide a prize for the winning team, such as conchas from the Mi Tierra Bakery, I could set that up as I do for my students. I typically pre-pay at the bakery for a set amount of treats and give "tickets" for those students to turn in at the bakery in exchange for their prize.

This would conclude the official visit, but it is likely that people will want to shop and eat.
