Session description

AI + Understanding By Design(UbD) allows you to supercharge your ability to design new lessons, units, and curriculum. UbD can be a difficult process, but with the addition of tools like Gemini and NotebookLM, you can create authentic lessons and assessments to become your personal force multiplier!

Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)
Hook: How I've had the successful use of AI to create a UbD lesson/materials/assesements
Overview: Introduce the topic of using Google Gemini and NotebookLM for UbD lesson creation.
Purpose: Explain how these tools can help teachers streamline the UbD process and create more engaging and authentic lessons.

Understanding the UbD Framework (5 minutes)
Key Components of UbD: Briefly review the three stages of UbD: desired results, evidence, and learning experiences.
Essential Questions: Discuss the importance of formulating essential questions that drive student inquiry and understanding.
Authentic Assessment: Explain how authentic assessments align with desired outcomes and provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning in real-world contexts.

Leveraging Google Gemini for UbD (25 minutes)
Generating Essential Questions: Demonstrate how to use Gemini to brainstorm essential questions based on specific learning objectives. Using a prompting iteration that adds in different components to show how to best develop answers.

Creating Learning Experiences: Individually explore via the prompting iteration how Gemini can suggest engaging activities, resources, and strategies to align with essential questions.

Developing Authentic Assessments: Show how Gemini can help design authentic assessments that measure student understanding and application of knowledge.

Using NotebookLM for UbD planning when you already have a beginning point. (15 minutes)

Organizing UbD Components: Demonstrate how NotebookLM can be used to organize and structure the UbD planning process.

Collaborating with Colleagues: How NotebookLM can facilitate collaboration among teachers for sharing ideas and resources, can create new assessments, and create new resources for student preparation and learning

Integrating AI-Generated Content: Show how to incorporate AI-generated content from Gemini into NotebookLM for lesson planning.

Creating a UbD Lesson (10 minutes)
Divide Participants into Groups: Assign each group a specific learning objective.
Guide the Process: Facilitate a workshop where participants use Gemini and NotebookLM to create a UbD lesson plan for their assigned objective.
Share and Discuss: Have groups share their lesson plans and discuss the benefits of using AI tools for UbD.

Conclusion (1 minutes)
Recap Key Points: Summarize the main benefits of using Google Gemini and NotebookLM for UbD lesson creation.
Encouragement: Encourage participants to experiment with these tools and continue to explore the possibilities of AI in education.
