Event Information
Participants will engage directly with Projectile Data Lab (PDL), a free interactive PhET simulation (sim). Through interaction and play, participants will experience the intuitive, dynamic, and accessible ways this sim develops difficult data and statistical concepts. The sim provides immediate feedback based on user actions, helping participants experience the iterative nature of learning as students would. Participants will engage in individual exploration time followed by peer-to-peer interaction and whole-group share out. The goal of this portion of the session is to create a shared and collective sense of agency and expertise of the sim environment of PDL.
Participants will deeply explore lessons leveraging two open educational resources: PDL alone and as embedded in Concord Consortium's Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP). The session leader will showcase multiple facilitation strategies designed to support students’ cognitive efforts as they make sense of variability, data, mean, standard deviation, sampling distributions, histograms, and the telling of stories with data visuals they create and analyze. Participants will engage in multiple think-pair-share cycles.
Participants will be invited to share their own ideas for how these sims support student learning. Participants will collaboratively debrief the lessons and facilitation moves to elevate ways appropriate technology use supports meaning-making of challenging statistical concepts. Participants will again be invited to think individually first before sharing their ideas with peers. This portion of the session will conclude with a whole-group discussion of ideas.
A tour of the PhET website will be given as participants learn about the many free resources available on the website including pre-made lesson plans and sim-customization options. The session will conclude with opportunities for participants to ask questions.
